Clean lines, structured shapes and luxe fabrics; we are huge fans of Charlie May clothing in Magpie HQ. The timeless, but contemporary minimalistic pieces provide the perfect compliment to our jewellery looks.
When we’re not lusting after clothes from the online store we are busy pinning looks from May’s stylish blog; Blog Girl a la Mode. Designer, Fashion Blogger, GirlBoss, Charlie May is a Magpie Muse in the ultimate sense of the word. Here we talk to her about styling tips, minimalistic jewellery and riot grrl!
What first sparked your passion for fashion?
I first got into fashion through music; punk and riot grrl were college favourites. I would buy clothes from charity shops and sew on patches, lace and faux fur (very different style to mine now!).
I loved sewing so much that I began making clothes and teaching myself to create patterns. Soon after I was off to university to study fashion design and learn what the fashion world was all about.
Where do you draw inspiration from as a designer ?
I draw influence from friends, inspiring women, and street style. I love the mix of high end and street wear, it’s a really fresh modern way to dress.
What are you currently working on in the Charlie May Studio?
We are launching menswear collection which is so exciting! I think my pieces are so easily translatable to women and men. I’m excited to see everyone’s reactions
Tell us about your jewellery style ?
I’m very clean and minimal when it comes to jewellery. I love my gold accents and right now love a pair of statement earrings.
Which 6 items of clothing & jewellery should every woman own to create the ultimate capsule wardrobe?
I love to pair more casual look with great accessories. Right now I’m wearing a great pair of black tailored suit trousers with some Eytys trainers, a white loose knit over a black tank top, Knobbly Studio Samurai earrings, a gold minimal cuff and ring.
Which piece (s) are you currently coveting from Magpie on the Run?
As well as Knobbly Studio I love Rebecca Gladstone too. There are soo many pieces I’m currently coveting.
What is your top styling tip?
Always be comfortable, because a confident woman is a beautiful woman
